Trash/Recycling & Bulk Pickups
Waste Management Trash & Recycling Information
Trash & recycling collection is included in our HOA's monthly assessments. Do not contact Waste Management to open a new resident account. Instead, read the following information below.
Individual Trash & Recycling Toters:For those residents who have the trash & recycling toters, trash & recycling collection is every Friday. The toters must be set out by the street curb Friday morning (or Thursday night), and removed before the end of the day after pickup. See where you can place your toters for pick-up
Trash & Recycling Dumpsters:For those residents who use our trash & recycling dumpsters (which are mostly our stack condo residents), the trash and recycling dumpster collection is also every Friday (except for the Lago Norte dumpster which is every Tuesday and Friday).
Holiday Pickup Schedule
For the following holidays below, Waste Management will delay our pickup service to Saturday -- unless the holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, in which case there is NO delay. I.e., if there's a holiday during the week (it DOES NOT fall on a Saturday or Sunday) then the trash and/or recycling pickup day will be on the following day.
New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day (4th of July), Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day
Trash & Recycling Do's and Don'ts
Watch a 30-minute recorded video from our HOA townhall meeting with Waste Management in which they go over what's allowed and what's not in your trash and recycling toters and our HOA dumpsters:
In short:
FLATTEN all cardboard boxes(!!) before tossing them in the recycling dumpster. If the box is left whole, it will fill up the dumpster more quickly and add to our trash costs with WM assessing our HOA an “overage” fee.
DO NOT bag your recycling items when tossing them in the dumpster or toter. All recycling must be loose items in the dumpsters and toters. If bagged, WM will assess our HOA a "contamination" fee.
DO NOT toss trash into the (white) recycling dumpsters and toters, or else WM will assess our HOA a "contamination" fee.
Plastic containers & items with the recycling triangle symbol #1-7 are accepted in recycling.
Make sure your plastic containers and other items are clean and dry. Clean off any food material in the containers.
Do not place plastic bags in recycling including grocery & produce bags, ziplock bags, and plastic shopping bags, which interfere with WM's sorting machines.
Do not toss packing materials into recycling such as styrofoam inserts/popcorn, polystyrene foam inserts, and bubble wrap. Instead place them in the trash dumpster or toter.
Help us by following these guidelines for disposing of your trash & recycling. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in Waste Management assessing "contamination" fees to our HOA, which drives up our trash collection costs for ALL homeowners!
Do not use our dumpsters for renovation projects and personal businesses Do not dispose of any contruction debris from a renovation project such as old sinks, toilets, appliances, cabinets, large boxes, wood, and drywall. Instead see Renting a Temporary Dumpster for more information.
Also, do not use our trash & recycling dumpsters for your a personal business, such as construction debris, old auto parts, and commercial food boxes. Instead, you may use an offsite location or other appropriate disposal location. Go to WM.com to find a disposal location near RSJ
Trash/recycling from renovation projects and personal businesses fills up our dumpsters more quickly and drives up our trash expense for all homeowners.
Still unsure what's allowed in the trash and recycling bins?
Call WM's Customer Service at 949-642-1191 Monday-Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Wait for a live WM representative and tell the representative your townhome address++ so that they can look up your account that exists under our HOA's main account, which is Customer ID 24-29202-23001.
Tell the representative you would like to exchange one or both of your toters for a different size, or that you need to replace one of your toters because it's broken.
Follow the representative's instructions to leave out your old toter(s) on the specific day mentioned by the representative. Leave your old toters at your usual location for pickup so that the WM driver can locate them.
++ A few stack units who also opted to use toters may call WM to request a different size or replacement toter.
Requesting New Trash & Recycling Toter Service
Any RSJ homeowner who currently use our trash & recycling dumpsters may switch over and use individual trash & recycling toters.
As part of the city of Irvine's compliance with CA Senate Bill 1383 in which residents are to separate their food and organic waste from the trash for composting, Waste Management has placed food/organic waste barrels in the following dumpster enclosures:
NOTE: Food waste may be collected at home in a clear or see through plastic bag – such as a grocery store produce bag – before disposing the bag in a WM food/organic waste barrel.
DO NOT toss trash or recycling items in the WM organic waste barrel, or else our HOA will get assessed a contamination fee, which will further drive up our HOA's trash expense!
